The 4 C’s of Leather
Leather is a wonderful custom upholstery option that many of our Calgary clients enjoy. Ethan Allen Calgary Designer, Annalyse Fercho explains the “4 C’s of Leather" so that you can learn about your leather products and how to keep them looking and feeling beautiful for many years to come.
- Characteristics: Natural markings on the hide will tell the life story of the animal. Scars, wrinkles, folds, stretch marks, insect bites and burns all contribute to the natural appearance of the hide. This varies in every leather.
- Charisma: Special effects can add to the appeal of the leather. Designs can be created by using techniques such as; hand-padding, two-tone sauvage, metallic finish, physical distressing, polishing to create sheen and buffing to create a velvety texture.
- Color Variation: Ethan Allen leathers are colored with aniline dyes that are absorbed into the hide, creating depth of color. Because the dye is absorbed differently in sections of the hide, color variation is normal.
- Care: Although leather is one of the most durable upholstery materials, proper care is needed to maintain its appearance. Leathers are sun-sensitive and will fade over time. Avoid extreme sunlight. Avoid placing too close to heat outlets, as harsh temperature can damage leather. Avoid sharp objects. Don’t use soaps, saddle soaps, oils, all-purpose cleaners, or unapproved solvents to clean. Unprotected leathers will absorb spills and stains, hair and body oils and soil. Ethan Allen protected leathers will resist spills, blot them quickly to prevent stains.
